NEW ALBUM FROM
DWAYNE ELIX & THE ENGINEERS

12 months in the making, Dwayne Elix & The Engineers have released their new album “Cowboys Rock n Roll”. It’s a country album dedicated to the 1950’s style Rock n Roll dancers, filled with shuffles, swing, and cha cha’s. The first single “Your Cheatin’ Heart” performed with a South American rhythm, made it’s way onto the Hot Fm Country Charts in time for the 2006 Mildura Country Music Festival. Other songs include the title track “Cowboys Rock n Roll”, an up beat version of “Great Pretender”, Faron Young’s “Goin’ Steady”, Dwayne’s songs “Feels Like Rain, Honky Tonk Daddy, I’m Not Crying Anymore, Honky Tonk Boogie From ’53, I Wanna Rock n Roll With You – written and recorded for a TV Documentary along with the instrumental “Cowboys Boogie Woogie”. Even a song dedicated to those truck drivers who like Rock n Roll – “Truck Drivin’ Boogie”. There’s Brenda Lee’s “Sweet Nothin’s”, Jim Reeves “Billy Bayou”, Slim’s “Fair Dinkum”, Hank’s “Tear In My Beer, Mel McDaniels “Stand Up”. A beautiful three part harmony version of Everly Brothers “All I Have To Do Is Dream” with no instruments and stereo harmonies. Bass player Dave Cook also wrote and recorded a song for the album “My Sweet Chains”. The album has captured the harmony sounds of the 1950’s and mixed them into a traditional/modern country album that has been rated as a great rock n roll dance album.

In stead of a speech, Dwayne made the statement “We are the first musical band to ever win a business award in Australia, thank you very much”. Drummer Steve Sullivan was not available to attend the evening.

Not being a person to miss an opportunity, Dwayne had host Glen Wheeler of radio 2UE announce The Engineers performance at Riverstone RSL Club Friday night, everyone is invited.

The first to congratulate the band this evening were two of the judges (soon to become groupies) who said they have The Engineers gig guide stuck on their fridge and visit

FEBRUARY  2006..DWAYNE ELIX & THE ENGINEERS NEWSLETTER

WINDSOR RSL CLUB $5
With the growing cost of inflation, Windsor RSL Club had to take a step back and look at where they are heading and what they can afford to offer members and their guests. It has been decided as from Saturday 28th January, an entry fee will be introduced for entertainment. Dwayne was consulted on this matter in regards to the Rock n Roll bands, and he asked some regular members what would be a reasonable entry fee. Everyone agreed that $5 per person was affordable. On most of the entertainment at Windsor RSL Club, tickets will be set between $10 to $20 per person depending on the value of the show. The RSL agreed on $5 per person for the Rock n Roll bands.
In many States around Australia, Club entertainment is already not free and has been like this for the past five to ten years. Windsor RSL Club is only a small club trying to offer their members the entertainment value of the Super-Size Clubs. And where else can we get such a great dance floor.

ROCK n ROLL DANCE LESSONS
C&M Dance Studio will begin a new 5 week course of Rock n Roll dance lessons starting on Monday 27th February at the Richmond Club – 7:30pm start. Check flyer for other venues and details. It is great fun for couples and single people, and under 15yrs are a reduced fee. For further information, contact 02 9654 8400. You will be amazed with what you will learn in just the first lesson.. NEW ALBUM
Dwayne Elix & The Engineers have started recording their new dance album. They have already completed the song Your Cheatin’ Heart, using a cha cha beat. People in the entertainment industry who have heard an un-mastered version of the song have said it sounds very close to The Mavericks. The Engineers are now moving onto the songs Great Pretender, and Truck Drivin’ Boogie. 14 songs are planned for the album, and hopefully will be completed by June this year. Other songs being considered for the album are Seven Lonely Days, Cowboys Rock n Roll, Tear In My Beer, Blue Tattoo, Adalida, for started. There is also plans for a duet on the album with a surprise guest singer.
The band has also started toying with different names to call the album. One name being considered is “Customline”, as the album is made up of The Engineers versions of songs – not performed like the originals. Dwayne is also looking at a distribution deal with a major record company.

THE BUS KEEPS A ROCKIN’
Another successful Roc The Bus trip has returned from a trip to Young and Cowra with thumbs up from all that went. Plans for other trips are already in the process. There is a possibility of another trip to Young and Cowra on Friday 24th to Sunday 26th of March. Some who have already done the trip are interested in returning, as well as people who have missed out before. We were planning a trip to Ulladulla on the first weekend of March but the coach is unavailable. However, plans are still going ahead to Roc The Bus to Ulladulla in July – Friday 7th to Sunday 8th. This trip will also include Jamberoo and a scenic drive through Kangaroo Valley stopping at Bowrol and Mittagong.
WE’RE BACK
IN 2006
WINDSOR RSL

Dwayne Elix & The Engineers are pleased to announce that they are returning to Windsor RSL Club in 2006. Some changes to the Club are being made, so where the Club use to book The Engineers for the whole year, they now can not commit for that length of time. Although the Club is planning to keep the auditorium, they will be refurbishing the room at some stage throughout the year. In 2006 there will be other changes as well. More cabaret shows will return, Friday night’s entertainment for the younger members and their guests has already started, and showing to be a growing success..

ROC ANOTHER BUS
With the Roc The Bus tour being so popular, another trip is now boarding. Although other rural areas are being planned for the year, the first trip is returning to Young and Cowra on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th January. However, this time there isn’t a performance on the Sunday and will return home mid afternoon, ( So people, no sickies on Monday……..)
Although the bus is fully booked, Dwayne’s wife Kylie is still taking names and details in case of any cancellations.

ULLADULLA NEXT NEW YEAR
Milton Ulladulla Ex Services Club are getting in early and enquiring about having Dwayne Elix & The Engineers for the next New Years Eve 31/12/06. If The Engineers take the offer, they will consider combining an overnight Roc The Bus Trip. Traveling in the morning of Sunday 31st Dec, and returning in the afternoon of Monday 1st Jan.

Mr Strings
email dwayne@visualsounds.com.au

DWAYNE’S NEW ALBUM
Dwayne Elix has prepared a new Bluegrass music album for the up and coming Mildura Country Music Festival at the end of September. Mr Strings is an album mixed with cover version of songs and songs Dwayne has written for the album. Popular songs like Orange Blossom Special, and the theme song to the movie “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”, and many more were recorded with only one singer and musician. Dwayne performed all the lead vocals, the harmony voices, and all the instruments. Guitar, Banjo, Bass, Mandolin, and Slide guitar, Dwayne played them all.
The songs he wrote for the album are – “Let’s Get This Show On The Road” a song about going to the Mildura Country Music Festival. “I Pick The Banjo Up” was written about the days when Dwayne grew up on the farm. “Dwayne’s Bluegrass Boogie” is an instrumental based on Guitar Boogie and performed on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and slide guitar. “Nadine’s Reel” is an Irish instrumental Dwayne wrote for his daughter.
The name of the album Mr Strings, used to be the nickname Dwayne got from radio compere Pinky (Gordon Fellows), back when Dwayne first came to Sydney. Pinky would always say “If it had strings, Dwayne could play it …”.

HOLDEN ON TO SUCCESS
Once again the annual All Holden Day held at the Hawkesbury Showground, was a big success. Raising a huge $32,000, donated to local community services and charities. Just some of those organisations that will benefit from this, Wilberforce Rural Fire Service, Lower McDonald Rural Fire Service, Freeman Reach Rural Fire Service, St Johns Snr’s, Variety Club NSW, Camp Quality, WIRES, Richmond Air Cadets, Hawkesbury Road Forum, Driver Education, Ronald McDonald House. Many of these organisations also work voluntary at the All Holden Day, from donating their organisations services to gate and car park duty. And it was a lot of gate duty to do when there was 3,540 people that came through the gate not including children under 15 years old that could have easily doubled the gate figures.
This year a record 605 Holdens entered the show & Shine on the Sunday. From classics to custom cars, utes, vans, and one tonners. We even saw a great display of Rock n Roll dancing from the Ramblin’ Rockers and some members of C&M Dance Studio, dancing to Dwayne Elix & The Engineers.
ROCK n ROLL LESSONS
C&M Dance Studio will begin a new 5 week course of Rock n Roll dance lessons starting on Monday 5th September at the Richmond Club – 7:30pm start. Check flyer for other venues and details. It is great fun for couples and single people, and under 15yrs are a reduced fee. For further information, contact 02 9654 8400. You will be amazed with what you will learn in just the first lesson.

2005, Dwayne Elix & The Engineers will celebrate their 10th Birthday at Windsor RSL Club. This is normally a Rock n Roll dance night, but The Engineers will be adding a bit extra to the night as they celebrate their birthday. And YES! There will be a Birthday Cake, over a metre long so we hope you’re hungry…...
One of the most asked questions Dwayne Elix & The Engineers get is “Where did the name come from ?” The answer is, in 1995 Dwayne released his first single “She Took The Engineer” and it exploded onto country music radio all over Australia. At the same time Dwayne was trying to come up with a name for his band. Before this the band was just called The Dwayne Elix Band. At the launch of his CD at St Marys Sound Centre, Dwayne decided to call his band “The Engineers”. The original line up in 1995 was Dwayne Elix lead singer, acoustic guitar, and mandolin – Dave Cook bass guitar, and harmonies – Steve Sullivan Drums, and harmonies, Kornel Banks fiddle, and Konrade Eliassen lead guitar, musical director, and the great man who put The Engineers together. In today’s Engineers, Kornel and Konrade are not in the band anymore and were replaced with Mike Tyne on Pedal Steel.

APRIL 2005..
NEW YEAR PLANS FOR
THE ENGINEERS

Dwayne Elix & The Engineers are in the negotiating room planning their next New Year’s Eve show. They have chosen not to go back to Blacktown RSL Club as four new years in a row is perhaps long enough. A short list of venues has been made in preference and proposals will be sent out in order. The first proposal was recently sent out, going to Windsor RSL Club. Only time will tell where Dwayne Elix & The Engineers will be performing for new year. But there is one thing we are very sure of, it will be a BIG night.
In past new year shows, The Engineers have made them a mix of band and tribute floorshows. But everything is revolved around being dance music. Tributes from Hank Williams to Buddy Holly, songs selected for their entertainment value and dance tempo.
RETURN TO Mt DRUITT
Dwayne Elix & The Engineers are pleased to announce their return to Mt Druitt Workers Club in October. The club has a country band on the last Sunday of each month and booked well ahead to select the best of country music bands available.
PLANNING NEW ALBUM
Dwayne Elix & The Engineers could be in the recording studio as soon as late April. They are hoping to have a new album released for their Tenth Birthday in June. The release date will be Saturday 18th of June at Windsor RSL Club.
TRIBUTE TO
ELVIS & SUN

To mark what would have been Elvis Presley’s 70th birthday, Dwayne Elix has released a six song CD. The EP album is a tribute to Elvis’ Sun recording years and contains songs – That’s Alright Mama, Blue Moon Of Kentucky, Good Rockin’ Tonight, Just Because, Baby Let’s Play House, I Don’t Care If The Sun Don’t Shine. Dwayne recorded all songs in an original Elvis/Sun style with quite a lot of echo. The CD was launched on Elvis’ birthday at Seven Hills Toongabbie RSL Club, where The Engineers performed a Rock n Roll dance that evening in honour of Elvis. The album is a limited edition selling for only $10 and resembles an original 1950’s Sun Record.

DWAYNE TURNS 40
When Dwayne Elix & The Engineers perform at Windsor RSL Club on Saturday 19th of February, it will be five days before Dwayne’s 40th Birthday (25/02/65). So we are planning to whoop it up that night, and hoping everyone will get into the party spirit

COUNTRY SINGER DIES
Adelaide based country singer Malcolm Rice, known as Big Mal Rice, died from a brain haemorrhage on Saturday 8th January at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Since the late 1970’s, Big Mal performed throughout Adelaide, and surrounding areas with his Traveling Country Band. He was a Top Ten finalist in the Tamworth Starmaker Quest in the early 1980’s. Although Big Mal wasn’t a recording artist but an exciting entertainer, there is a 19 song album getting about titled Mal Rice “Nullarbor, Nashville & Nazareth”. It features two songs Big Mal wrote, “Silver City” and “ Nullarbor”. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and fellow country music artists. Big Mal was laid to rest on Friday 14th of January with a large funeral celebrating such a great artist. He was married with two young daughters. Full story can be read on

The album will contain all traditional Bluegrass music with some of Dwayne’s own penned songs and instrumentals.

New Bluegrass Album is a 4 time sell out
Dwayne Elix new album "The Festival's Comin' " was a huge hit at the Mildura Country Music Festival, selling out four times over the festival period.  As new stock arrived, back orders were filled.  Dwayne's new album was the only Bluegrass music available at the festival and no one could get enough of that Duelling Banjos.   Every performance Dwayne had done at the festival, had to include a couple of banjo tunes to satisfy the audience.  The title song "The Festival's Comin' " is still successfully climbing up the Hot FM Country Charts.
Although Dwayne performed every instrument on the album and produced it, Dwayne claims it was still a joint effort.   The album was Digitally Mastered by Doug Weedon.   Dwayne says "without Doug's mastering, the album would had never got off the ground.   " A second Bluegrass album is planned for Mid 2004, in time for the next Mildura Country Music Festival.

The Engineers Dance Album
Dwayne Elix & The Engineers  are releasing their new dance album at Windsor RSL Club on Saturday 20th September.  The album is dedicated to the rock n roll dancers but contains 100% country music.    The Engineers recorded a selection of songs from legendary artists Johnny Horton, George Jones, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and a song Dwayne wrote for the album.   Although the songs were recorded in a makeshift studio, the album is recognised as a live album.   The Engineers recorded each song as a band and not like other acts one instrument at a time.   Dwayne and the boys arrived at the studio at 10am and finished at 6pm, completing a full album of songs.   The album was supposed to be recorded in Sydney, but due to the City to Surf Run, roads were cut off and a new studio had to be found.  The Vietnam Vets Motor Bike Club offered their Club House as a place to record and it was perfect.   There is a slight chance the album may not be ready for the planned release date, but so far, as The Engineers would say, "everything's on track"

Dwayne's on the MO Board
Dwayne Elix has just been elected as one of the new directors of the MO awards. For those who are unaware, the MO awards are the longest running organization for awarding excellence in live performance in Australia. The MO awards for excellence in live performance, were first presented in 1976 with the late Johnny O'Keefe as the inaugural Chairman. Don Lane was responsible for what has become an extremely popular and appropriate name for the awards in honour of Australian Clown and Comic Roy Rene, who under his character name of 'Mo McCackie', was one of Australia's greatest vaudevillian performers. Mo's son, Sam Vander Sluice, is a strong supporter of the annual 'MO' awards, which he regards as a fitting tribute to his late father. The Australian 'MO' awards incorporated in 1992, is a registered charity. The Annual Australian Entertainment 'MO' Awards presentation ceremony is now one of the major events on the entertainment calendar and is well supported by all sectors of the industry. Another function the 'MO' Awards have as an association is to raise funds for the Australian Entertainment 'MO' Awards Benevolent Fund at various functions, including the Annual Presentation Ceremony. From these funds payments are made to people or other incorporated charities associated with the entertainment profession dosing periods of illness, accident or death. They came with a helping hand when Roland Storm lost everything in the Bush fires, helping with funds and a shoulder.

Dwayne, Dave Cook and Steve Sullivan

Dwayne & Dave

New Duo

Dwayne Elix & Dave Cook have teamed up to perform as a duo.   The new duo will be performing at such venues as Bronte RSL, Richmond Club, Maroubra Seals Sport & Community Club, Punchbowl RSL and soon many more.   They will be performing a mixture of popular tunes from Dwayne Elix & The Engineers songlist as well as new material.   The idea of creating the duo is to fill some of the available dates that The Engineers have in their diary.   Most venues book their bands in 3 months lots and Duos in 1 and 2 month lots.   So it's quite easy to see when a date will be available for the duo.   With the tight harmony Dave expresses behind Dwayne's voice and the comedy antics they perform, this duo will have audiences eating out of their hand.

Vietnam, How it is
Released soon
Dave Cook has been busy in Ace Fender's Recording Studio along side Producer Glen Bain.   The final stages of the new single "Vietnam, How It Is"   are being completed right now and should be released for sale on ANZAC Day.   A great artistry was gathered to perform on the single with singer Wayne Horner, Violin Cheryl Harvey, Guitars Glen Bain, Mandolin Dwayne Elix, Keyboards George Boyer.   Wayne travelled all the way from Victoria to sing the song, as well as he was involved with writing the music.     The song explains some of the long term affects the Vietnam War had on many of the soldiers who returned home, Australian and Americans alike.   So the song will also be released in America.   The Locomotive News will continue with this story next month and inform you how to purchase your copy.
