"I'd forgotten what a great singer you are!" - ERIC CLAPTON, May 2007
    Albert Lee
Some notes about the artists and the event:
ALBERT LEE is regarded as the finest country rock guitarist in the world, and has played with most of the greats of both rock and roll and country music, including many years alongside Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton and The Everly Brothers, as well as periods with Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe Cocker, Joan Armatrading, Chris Farlowe, and a time as keyboard player and singer with The Crickets, Buddy Holly's old band. Albert also has a prolific career as a performer and recording artist in his own right, and his most recent album 'Road Runner' was released just last year on the Sugar Hill label. As well as pursuing his own career, particularly in Europe where he tours with his friends Hogan's Heroes, Albert is currently a member of Bill Wyman's super band The Rhythm Kings, which also includes Georgie Fame, Peter Frampton, and Procul Harem's Gary Brooker. He was also a prominent member of the elite band of musicians who presented the magical 'Concert For George' (Harrison) at London's Albert Hall in 2002.

WHEELERS AND DEALERS brings together a bunch of Sydney's finest acoustic musicians to create one of the best traditional and contemporary folk bands in Australia, and three of the band have a long association with Albert Lee and his music, from their days with Sydney's legendary Flying Emus .

This special house concert is in fact a dress rehearsal preceding a brief east coast Australia tour for Albert and the band, which starts in Victoria on Friday 17th, and ends at The Basement on Thursday 23rd August. Wheelers and Dealers will present their own repertoire, as well as backing Albert.

Spend a very special night at The Basement with Grammy winning guitarist ALBERT LEE showcasing what Emmylou Harris describes as his "extraordinary gifts as a singer, song stylist and brilliant guitar player - often emulated but never equalled". Albert will include material from his recent Sugar Hill CDs Heartbreak Hill (2003) and Road Runner (2006) and delve deeply into a treasure chest of wonderful music compiled over years of playing with and alongside the greats of rock, country and popular music - artists such as Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Joe Cocker, The Crickets, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and The Everly Brothers. Albert will feature on both electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards and lead vocals, backed by a band of hot players including former Flying Emus Malcolm Wakeford, Mike Kerin and Michael Vidale, and other members of Sydney band Wheelers and Dealers, who will also open the concert.

Once described by Eric Clapton, with whom he played for five years, as “the greatest guitarist in the world”, Albert is revered as the foremost stylist of Country Rock guitar, and was nicknamed ‘The Telemaster’ in deference to his wizardry with the Fender Telecaster guitar. Albert’s major career began when he played with Chris Farlowe, and then hit the USA with his band Head Hands & Feet , going on to play with Joe Cocker, Joan Armatrading, and long stints with Clapton, Emmylou Harris and The Everly Brothers. As a keyboard player and singer he was also a member of The Crickets, joining the founder members who played with Buddy Holly. Nowadays he also plays with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, along with Georgie Fame and Procul Harem’s Gary Brooker, and he was a prominent member of the band in the 2002 ‘Concert For George’ (Harrison). Albert regularly tours in Europe, backed by his friends Hogan's Heroes, and has had two albums released in recent times on the Sugar Hill label, "Heartbreak Hill" in 2003 and "Roadrunner" in 2006. Writing the sleeve notes for "Heartbreak Hill" Emmylou Harris said "This album celebrates (our) friendship and Albert's extraordinary gifts as a singer, song stylist and brilliant guitar player. His sound is unmistakable, often emulated but never equaled. When St. Peter asks me to chronicle the highlights of my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say (with pride if that's allowed) that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee."
