Sharon’s hit single ‘Jack Of Diamonds’ has just made it into the European CMA charts. The song has been gaining momentum on the overseas airwaves since it hit Number 1 in the most played charts in The Netherlands earlier this year, and this week was the Number 1 most played song in Ireland, No 5 in Germany, and No4 in Czech Republic. The song sits at 13 in the top 50 most played songs in Europe over the past week. The chart can be viewed here at http://www.europeancma.com/chart.htm

On the Australian front, ‘Jack’ reached number 12 on the Top30 Country Tracks (and is now at 24). The song is in the top 10 on the Mildura Hot Fm Chart, currently at Number 9.

Spick-Wiz Fundraising Evening
Sharon was recently part of the panel for a local fundraising event in Leeton for the Whitton Basketball and Tennis courts. The panel consisted of Sharon, Melinda Schneider, Time Wedde (from band ‘The Flood’), Grant Luhrs, local muso Pat Sergi, and Rap artist Mustafus. The quiz master for the night was local radio personality Brad George, who also researched the music questions for the night. After the second round, Melinda’s team was ahead by 4 points, but after completion of the last round, and a clean sweep of correct answers in round three, Tim, Sharon and grant took out the night as champions 59 to 53.
Over $1100 was raised on the night, and the Tennis & Basketball courts in Whitton are now completed. Pics from the night can be viewed at www.sharonbenjamin.com.au/gallery.html

On A Scarier Note – A Very Close Call!!
Returning home from a gig last in Captains Flat Sunday afternoon, just a few K’s the Sydney side of the Yass Truck stops, Sharon and Husband Mark Hillier were greeted with every musicians greatest fear – A vehicle out of control – air born and heading straight towards them!!! The car had left the dual carriage way heading in the opposite direction and landed barely a metre from the musos car. Luckily when the vehicle hit the road, it pulled suddenly to the left and away from danger. So many what if’s!!! What if Sharon and Mark were in the Right Lane….What if the other car hadn’t suddenly pulled to the left….what if the other car had been a little higher air born and travelled further. Luckily no-one was injured in the incident. Suffice to say to all your muso’s out there…..Take care on the roads!!!!!

Keep an eye out for release later in the year.

Seniors Week – Narrandera Activities Centre
Sharon was once again asked to sing a few songs at the Narrandera Aged Activities Centre during Seniors Week. Sharon was most pleased to be asked as the music she chose to sing included old favourites by some of her favourite singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Reeves, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and Vera Lynn. A photo of Sharon performing featured on the front page of the local newspaper, (The Narrandera Argus) which is now posted on Sharon’s website. www.sharonbenjamin.com.au

Melbourne Tour – Sharon Benjamin & Craig Giles recently took in 3 venues in Melbourne to present 3 very different shows. Friday night, gig 1 of the tour was Pascoe Vale RSL for The Australasian Country Music Guild. Shaz, Craig, Mark on bass and David on Drums presented a fine mixture of great country music for both the dance and the listening crowd to enjoy. Sharon last performed for the Guild around 12 years ago, and was stoked to discover that they have been going strong since the mid 1960’s with great Country Music pretty much every Friday night.

Gig 2 – Dancin’ Lines 10th Birthday Party – Linedancing Galore!!! Norwood Secondary College hall was converted to a collage of green in the afternoon preceding the line dance spectacular in preparation for the pre - St Pat’s Day party! More than 230 Excited Line Dancers, also draped in green, took over the hall and owned the dance floor for more than 5 hours of Sharon & Craig performing with Cd’s thrown in the breaks. Sharon rallied the crowd into a frenzy when she got down amongst the dancers to line dance with them while she sang for two songs. The night was Fantastic, and extremely GREEN!

Gig 3 – Sunday arvo at Noble Park – A much more relaxed show for the Sunday was well received with heaps of original music as well as old favourites. There were a few dancers, but mostly folks were happy to sit, relax and take in the tunes. Thanks Melbournians for making Shaz & Mark, Craig & Ros feel so welcome, and special thanks to Keith Davies, his wife Yvonne and family for opening your house for the guys to take over! Leaves you all warm and fuzzy. (Pics are on Sharon’s gallery page on the website) – www.sharonbenjamin.com.au

Sharon Benjamin Update – March 2007
Jack Of Diamonds – Hits the Top30 Chart!!
Sharon’s latest single has just made it into the Country Tracks Top 30 chart with a bullet.

The single is the second lifted from Sharon’s “Perfect Little World” album, which was recorded at Redbak Studios in Leeton. ‘Jack Of Diamonds’, along the with entire album, has been receiving excellent reviews for not only Sharon’s vocal performances and song writing, but also for production and musicianship.

On the worldwide front, ‘Jack Of Diamonds’ recently became the number 1 most played country song in The Netherlands!

Sharon’s album is available at record stores through Onestop Entertainment. For purchase online, goto http://store.countrymusic.com.au/store/item.inetstore?id=2207

Sharon would like to thank Dj’s for their wonderful support both across Australia, and internationally.
Australian Woman’s Weekly Truck
Sharon recently had the opportunity to perform at Leeton’s Mountford Park on the truck organised by Australian Women’s Weekly Magazine, in conjunction with ‘Today’ and the Commonwealth Bank. Sharon’s original songs were very well received, and organisers asked Sharon if she would be in the area for the Wagga Wagga date. After her solo performance at Mulwala Club, Sharon headed off early Sunday morning for Wagga Beach for another spot. The truck will be touring the Country over the next 11 months or so, and the show includes local performers, fashion, makeovers and information as well as funds raised on the day being donated to a selected local charity. Leeton’s chosen charity was Jumpstart, and in Wagga, Country Hope was selected. Keep an eye out in your local Commonwealth Branch to see when the truck will be near you!!!

All Star Country Roadshow
Reg Poole, Craig Giles, Owen Blundell and Sharon Benjamin joined together for a four day tour during February, and the result was spectacular!

With such a wealth of stage experience, and such a wonderful variety of music and comedy, the show turned out to be a hit with full houses on two of the three nights. For over three entertainment packed hours, audiences were treated to fine Australian Original music and some old favourites, side splitting comedy with special guest appearance from Franky J. Spencer, and duets featuring Sharon & Craig, and then Owen & Reg.

Shepparton Line Dancing Afternoon
On the back end of the Roadshow tour, Sharon performed a Linedancing Show at the Shepparton RSL club as part of the Country Music Festival. For 3 hours, Sharon entertained the crowd with great old and new linedancing tracks, and even got down off stage and in amongst the dancers as she sang and danced at the same time!! Previously a Line Dance instructor of over 8 years experience, Sharon is probably the only entertainer in the Country who can Line Dance as she performs!

Tamworth 2007
Sharon and Hubby Mark Hillier had another huge Tamworth Festival this year. The pair do the sound and look after the artists all day every day at the City Plaza from 10am til 5pm. That of course includes setting up the P.A. gear every morning and packing it up every afternoon. Sharon is also the compare for the plaza which is always a most enjoyable experience as the independent talent that comes across the stage each year is exceptional. This years lineup included: Michael King, Craig Giles, Amos Morris (who just signed with EMI), Nathan Carlton, Mark Tempany & Alison Hams, Felicity, Tracy Coster, Jetty Road, The Lees, Dale Duncan (Peoples Choice Award Winner 07), Alex Watt, Col Finley, and Pixie who performed for the official opening. This year the plaza also had meet & greets with signed artists – James Blundell, Sunny Cowgirls, Anne Kirkpatrick, and The Wolverines (who surprised everyone by performing two songs) Huge thanks to all the hard working staff at the City Plaza – in particular, Keith & Jo. Also to Jenny at Payless Shoes for letting Shaz & Mark put the gear in your shop. Congratulations to Donna & Kerry at Axiom Entertainment for organising such a quality line-up of Indie Artists.

Craig Giles & Sharon Benjamin Show was held this year’s festival in the Heritage Room at the Tamworth Community Centre. This years guest artists were Darryl Lamb and Cameron Mason who both did 4 songs each. Sharon & Craig both showcased their own individual styles with solo performances, before hitting the stage together for a combination of rich male & female vocals with some quick wit and humorous sarcasm thrown in for good fun. The venue is fantastic so check out dates for this show at next years Tamworth Festival.

All Star Country Roadshow
Sharon will combines talents with Reg Poole, Craig Giles & Owen Blundell for a tour from Thursday 15th Feb. All talented and seasoned performers in their own right, these four entertainers combine their wealth of stage experience for the show which will take audiences on an entertaining musical journey from start to finish with a variety of old and new songs as well as some unpredictable comedy. NOT TO BE MISSED!

Sharon Benjamin New Single
New Single – Jack Of Diamonds

NFS 110 – Track 4

‘Jack of Diamonds’ is the second single from Sharon Benjamin’s critically acclaimed CD “Perfect Little World”. The previous single “High as Heaven” was well received locally but garnered a lot of airplay and respect worldwide. Two songs from PLW received honourable mentions in the 2006 International Unisong.

Benjamin’s strength as a songwriter is well recognized in Australia, where her material is in high demand by other country artists, but she’s no slouch as a singer. Sharon Benjamin is possessed of a voice that is as smooth and sweet as honey – well suited to drawing the emotional depths from her mature and engaging lyrics.

Whilst PLW moves seamlessly across a palate that touches on blues and even calypso, “Jack of Diamonds” comes straight from the deep country heart of the CD with such uplifting confidence that you’d swear it was a long-forgotten classic. Sharon’s album is available through One Stop Entertainment from any good record store.

Sharon Supports Melinda Schnieder
Sharon and Mark had the pleasure of performing as a support to Melinda during her recent tour when the show reached the Griffith Leagues Club. Sharon and Mark hit the stage around 8.30pm to a delighted and surprised audience, and performed a 35min acoustic set of Sharon Benjamin original songs. After a break and an opportunity to talk to fans, Sharon and Mark sat back and enjoyed Melinda and band with the rest of the crowd, then caught up on some backstage chat after the show.

Sharon Benjamin Duo – Coast Tour
One of the best things about being a full time musician is that you sometimes have the opportunity to see some beautiful parts of this Country! Sharon and Mark recently took some time in between gigs for a bit of a look-see around our coastline. The two performed at Bega, Captains Flat, and Merimbula CM Festival as a special guest of Leanda O’Brien. Rhe rest of the week was spent checking out the sights including, Mogo Zoo and township, Kiama Blowhole (which was huge on the day), the Pinnacles, Merimbula Aquarium, and some of the most beautiful mountain and coastal views you’ll see, before heading home via gigs at Mudgee and Lithgow.

Redbak Recording Studios – Dec 2006
Redbak Recording Studios is located in the Riverina District of NSW, and even though the studio is a relative newcomer, Redbak have already produced 2 fine Australian Country albums from very different sides of the coin.

Sharon Benjamin – Perfect Little World
The studio’s flagship album is Sharon Benjamin’s ‘Perfect Little World’ which was released April 2006. Sharon and husband Mark Hillier decided to create Redbak after tiring of the hardships of recording so far from home as well as creative differences between how Sharon was hearing her original songs and producer’s varying influences. Hence why the Studios slogan is ‘Reflecting the Essence of the Artist’.

Sharon is a talented singer/songwriter, and ‘Perfect Little World’ is the first time we have heard the creative “Artist” side.

Reg Poole – For The Love Of My Country
The ‘Gentle Giant’ Reg Poole is an Australian Country Music Legend – 3 times Golden Guitar Winner, OAM Recipient and owner of a place on the Roll Of Renown. Reg’s latest album was recorded at Redbak early 2006, and since it’s release, has already gained numerous awards and nominations including some pending: Aria Nomination for Country Album, Male Vocal of the year finalist for ‘Tribute To Slim’ – Bungendore Feb 2007, Finalist for Country Ballad of the Year with ‘For The Love Of My Country’ – TSA – Jan 2007, Finalist for Gospel Song Of The Year with Merrilyn Rossington for ‘Halfway Home’ – TSA – Jan 2007, plus many more.

Redbak Studios is now recording another 2 songs for Reg for inclusion on a forthcoming Selection Records Compilation due for release 2007. One song is a Henry Lawson poem set to music, and the other is a song called ‘A Little Piece Of Me’ written by Sharon Benjamin. Eric Watson from Selection was very impressed with what he heard on Reg Poole’s album and so commissioned Redbak for these two songs.

Craig Giles – New All Australian Album
‘Mr Versatile’, Craig Giles has also chosen Redbak to record his latest project – An all Australian album. With Craig’s hectic schedule, the project has been in the pipeline for a few months, but recording has commenced, and the album should be ready for release early to mid 2007. Keep an eye out.
Sharon Benjamin – All Country Covers
In between touring, producing albums, and song writing, Sharon has somehow fitting in some time to squeeze in a project of her own – a 16 track album containing some of the finest and most popular Country Music that feature in her live club shows. The album is set to be a very popular edition to her catalogue, with pre orders already coming in. Release early 2007.

Leigh Moneghetti – Coming Soon
Redbak Studios is looking forward to beginning a new project in early January for Victorian based Leigh Moneghetti. Leigh’s album is to be half original songs and half covers, so it is sure to be a fine mixture of great Country Music.

Redbak Recording Studios – New Premises
2007 is shaping up to be extremely hectic for the ‘Redbak’ team which includes Mark Hillier, Sharon Benjamin & Marcus Hooper. In amongst the coming projects, Sharon and Mark are in the process of creating a brand new custom built facility on a half acre property in Leeton, with plans already drawn up. More info soon.

Sharon Benjamin Update October 2006
Tour with Reg Poole and Owen Blundell
With Reg's and Sharon's new albums both hot at the moment, the pair met up to perform at Bourke recently. With the contrast in styles of these two artists, the show was very well recieved. Next day the entourage of four, Reg's lovely wife Dot who handled the door and product sales and Shaz's hubby Mark who did the sound, heading off to meet up with the talented Owen Blundell for a show at Forbes. With the added touch of Owen's own talent and style, plus that comedic touch, the show was well supported by the locals. Thanks also to Charmaine Pout who promoted the show on her radio show and also performed a spot on the night.

Next day we all hit the road once more for Griffith. The room was great for a show such as this. The seats were nice and close and well lit, which served to make the show very intimate. In all, the mini tour was a great success. Sharon Benjamin Duo is now back into their club circuit and Reg and Owen are off to New Zealand. Must do it again sometime soon.....will keep you all updated.

Previous EP; Sharon Benjamin
“As the Crow Flies”

Wistful stories and tales of the road, of childhood suburbia and of dealing with the harder truths.  “As The Crow Flies” is the new 6 track release for Sharon Benjamin.  It comes as a welcome follow-up to her debut of several years previous which saw chart success as an independent release on the Australian country charts.  In a field where rehashes and cliché abound, Sharon appears to go all out to carve new territory in both feel and lyrical outlook.  Welcome relief for those who yearn for true country sound but with none of the familiar or well trodden trappings.

Opening with the upbeat and bittersweet ‘Hidden In The Lights’ (a tale of friendship rediscovered) gentle vocals lead a listener into rooms at times melancholy but always with the promise of redemption.  A real stand-out ‘This Time’ deals with a woman finally awakening to the circumstance of domestic abuse and finding the courage to leave the family home.  Moody arpeggios and sweet backing vocals are everywhere here as chords and rhythms tread blue and unpredictable paths.  In amongst the ballads some humour offsets the sadness with playful country licking and swinging good feel on the bootscooter ‘Pick On Me Day’.  Anyone who’s ever snuck into work without the boss knowing can’t help but identify with this riffy little number.  And who ever thought a song titled ‘Hopscotch’ could touch on the whole circle of life that we all take so for granted.  This one is a breath of surprise.

More than anything, one thing immediately strikes you about Sharon Benjamin:  it’s the crafting of fine words and always the promise of spinning a real yarn that sets her apart from so many contemporaries.  Into the pot, throw production that provides great depth and warmth letting the songs breathe at times but without ever overblowing or tampering with the essential mood.

As pure song writing goes, the title track taps a vein as rich as the classic Orbison songs of unresolved sorrow.  A moving tribute to her father years after his passing, vocalist Sharon provides us with a country requiem where the imagery of the high flying bird beckons us into a theme so universal that to say it is ‘touching’ or ‘moving’ does the track no justice whatever.  No doubt the ‘Big O’ would have been honoured to have had this wee gem in his pocketbook of tunes.

“And it travels as the crow flies, knows no boundaries, straight to you.”

Well for all those fortunates who warmed to the promise of the first CD titled “Strike Two”, ‘As The Crow Flies’ comes along to reacquaint us with the storytelling of one of Australia’s finer singer/songwriters who is poised to reach a large and dedicated audience.
