2006 - Bigger and Better for BOB HOWE
2006 has started with a bang for Sydney-based musical identity BOB HOWE. First, Bob was honoured to be a Top 5 nominee in the Vocal Instrumental category of the Variety section in the 30th Australian Entertainment 'MO' Awards. The Award winners will be announced very soon on Tuesday 14th March.

January also saw a national release for the compilation CD of ABC Radio's Saturday Night Country Hottest Hits Volume 2 on the ABC Country label. Bob's instrumental tune LAST COWBOY WALTZ is track 11 on this 20 track album. Other featured artists include John Williamson, Neil Murray, Beccy Cole, Paul Kelly and the Stormwater Boys featuring Kasey Chambers, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Harvey and Willie Nelson.

On February 1st, Tomkins Guitars with Bob and his HILLBILLY HEAVEN band were delighted to welcome legendary guitarist from Austin, Texas Redd Volkaert as their special guest for a gig at the Bridge Hotel in Rozelle, Sydney. Redd has played with countless stars, in particular as guitarist for Merle Haggard.

Now March has brought the release of Bob’s long-awaited solo instrumental CD entitled GO WEST! After 30 years as a session musician and producer of other artist’s recordings, at last a full album of Bob’s guitar styles and multi-instrumental talents. The album takes in the great western movie and TV themes plus a few surprises. At his website you can read the full album notes that take you through the album track by track, hear samples of every tune and also purchase GO WEST in the on-line shop.

Add to all of this Bob’s column in Capital News (Cowboys In Cyberspace), his monthly live concert series (Canterbury Country, heading towards its 6th birthday!), his weekly spot on ABC Radio’s Saturday Night Country (as 'Big Bob from Bondi') and all his other live appearances on stages around the nation and cruise ships across the Pacific, 2006 is just getting bigger and better for BOB HOWE.

Saturday Night at The Trocadero
 (watching Lonnie Lee)
The Blues Supergroup 'Chain' who refer to Lonnie as the father of Australian Rockabilly, had written this song for their new 2005 album and have graciously allowed Starlite Records to include
it as a BONUS TRACK with this
release.
"Best Friends"
It was written by Wayne Jackson of the most famous pop music horn section in the world. "The Memphis Horns" who have provided backup for many of the biggest names in music from Elvis to Otis Redding, Sting to Jerry Lee Lewis, The Doobies to Neil Young and now Lonnie Lee. Lonnie and Wayne have been friends for close to 40 years and it was on a recent visit back to Nashville that Wayne gave him a listen to the song.
It's melody, lyrics and over all warm message, inspired Lonnie to get together few other friends such as Bob Babbitt of The Funk Bros. who just happen to be Nashville 'A List' studio pickers, and recorded it.  Back in Sydney, he recorded his vocals, had Tony Burkys lead guitarist of The Leemen add some extra interesting sounds and prepared it for release.

Christmas with Col Joye
Christmas is about sharing laughter, traditions and love with friends and family. And who better to supply the music for such an occasion than one of Australia’s best-loved and most enduring entertainers, the legendary Col Joye.

Col’s just released his very own album for the festive season, Christmas with Col Joye — and it’s a corker, hitting just the right note for Christmas Aussie style.

With his warm, mellow voice and an unerring ability to interpret a song just as it was meant to be heard, Col brings exactly the right feel to Christmas — listening to him, it’s impossible not to feel the festive spirit flow into your veins.

“Christmas has always been a big deal in our family. We have 35 people around the table on Christmas day sitting down to the full traditional dinner, and our Christmas tree’s covered with decorations that we’ve collected from our travels all over the world,” Col said.

“The carols are on at full volume all day as well, so it seemed a logical step to put together my own collection of Christmas music — a lot of it songs our family’s loved and sung for years.”

Christmas with Col Joye is a wonderfully diverse collection of music that covers the spectrum from the more traditional carols to contemporary songs and more unusual Christmas offerings.

Although the concept of a white Christmas is given a nod on tracks like “Sleigh Ride”, Christmas with Col Joye definitely has a Down Under vibe about it. Highlights include the wonderful “Christmas Island” and “Mele Kaliki Maka”, bringing a warm, tropical feel to the album.

There are plenty of familiar tracks, including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, “The Christmas Song”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Feliz Navidad” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, as well as more recent additions to the Christmas genre, such as “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, “Baby Please Come Home” and “Last Christmas”.

Col’s included the wonderful — and lesser known — “Christmas with the Old Folks” because his mum Minnie taught it to him as a youngster and it’s been a firm favourite of the extended Jacobsen family for decades, performed with love and tears every Christmas.

Not only do many of the songs on Christmas with Col Joye relate to our hot-weather Christmas, Col’s distinctive Australian accent is a refreshing change from most Christmas music collections.

Christmas with Col Joye is the kind of album that will appeal immediately to the whole family — from grandma to the smallest child. Its warmth, genuine love of Christmas and the sense of family, fun and celebration shine through. This is the must-have Christmas album this festive season and it will be played over and over again as the years roll by.
