2006 - Bigger and Better for BOB HOWE
2006 has started with a bang for Sydney-based musical identity BOB HOWE. First, Bob was honoured to be a Top 5 nominee in the Vocal Instrumental category of the Variety section in the 30th Australian Entertainment 'MO' Awards. The Award winners will be announced very soon on Tuesday 14th March.

January also saw a national release for the compilation CD of ABC Radio's Saturday Night Country Hottest Hits Volume 2 on the ABC Country label. Bob's instrumental tune LAST COWBOY WALTZ is track 11 on this 20 track album. Other featured artists include John Williamson, Neil Murray, Beccy Cole, Paul Kelly and the Stormwater Boys featuring Kasey Chambers, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Harvey and Willie Nelson.

On February 1st, Tomkins Guitars with Bob and his HILLBILLY HEAVEN band were delighted to welcome legendary guitarist from Austin, Texas Redd Volkaert as their special guest for a gig at the Bridge Hotel in Rozelle, Sydney. Redd has played with countless stars, in particular as guitarist for Merle Haggard.

Now March has brought the release of Bob’s long-awaited solo instrumental CD entitled GO WEST! After 30 years as a session musician and producer of other artist’s recordings, at last a full album of Bob’s guitar styles and multi-instrumental talents. The album takes in the great western movie and TV themes plus a few surprises. At his website you can read the full album notes that take you through the album track by track, hear samples of every tune and also purchase GO WEST in the on-line shop.

Add to all of this Bob’s column in Capital News (Cowboys In Cyberspace), his monthly live concert series (Canterbury Country, heading towards its 6th birthday!), his weekly spot on ABC Radio’s Saturday Night Country (as 'Big Bob from Bondi') and all his other live appearances on stages around the nation and cruise ships across the Pacific, 2006 is just getting bigger and better for BOB HOWE.

"Best Friends"
It was written by Wayne Jackson of the most famous pop music horn section in the world. "The Memphis Horns" who have provided backup for many of the biggest names in music from Elvis to Otis Redding, Sting to Jerry Lee Lewis, The Doobies to Neil Young and now Lonnie Lee. Lonnie and Wayne have been friends for close to 40 years and it was on a recent visit back to Nashville that Wayne gave him a listen to the song.
It's melody, lyrics and over all warm message, inspired Lonnie to get together few other friends such as Bob Babbitt of The Funk Bros. who just happen to be Nashville 'A List' studio pickers, and recorded it.  Back in Sydney, he recorded his vocals, had Tony Burkys lead guitarist of The Leemen add some extra interesting sounds and prepared it for release.

Christmas with Col Joye
Christmas is about sharing laughter, traditions and love with friends and family. And who better to supply the music for such an occasion than one of Australia’s best-loved and most enduring entertainers, the legendary Col Joye.
Col’s just released his very own album for the festive season, Christmas with Col Joye — and it’s a corker, hitting just the right note for Christmas Aussie style.

With his warm, mellow voice and an unerring ability to interpret a song just as it was meant to be heard, Col brings exactly the right feel to Christmas — listening to him, it’s impossible not to feel the festive spirit flow into your veins.

“Christmas has always been a big deal in our family. We have 35 people around the table on Christmas day sitting down to the full traditional dinner, and our Christmas tree’s covered with decorations that we’ve collected from our travels all over the world,” Col said.

“The carols are on at full volume all day as well, so it seemed a logical step to put together my own collection of Christmas music — a lot of it songs our family’s loved and sung for years.”

Christmas with Col Joye is a wonderfully diverse collection of music that covers the spectrum from the more traditional carols to contemporary songs and more unusual Christmas offerings.

Although the concept of a white Christmas is given a nod on tracks like “Sleigh Ride”, Christmas with Col Joye definitely has a Down Under vibe about it. Highlights include the wonderful “Christmas Island” and “Mele Kaliki Maka”, bringing a warm, tropical feel to the album.

There are plenty of familiar tracks, including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, “The Christmas Song”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Feliz Navidad” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, as well as more recent additions to the Christmas genre, such as “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, “Baby Please Come Home” and “Last Christmas”.

Col’s included the wonderful — and lesser known — “Christmas with the Old Folks” because his mum Minnie taught it to him as a youngster and it’s been a firm favourite of the extended Jacobsen family for decades, performed with love and tears every Christmas.

Not only do many of the songs on Christmas with Col Joye relate to our hot-weather Christmas, Col’s distinctive Australian accent is a refreshing change from most Christmas music collections.

Christmas with Col Joye is the kind of album that will appeal immediately to the whole family — from grandma to the smallest child. Its warmth, genuine love of Christmas and the sense of family, fun and celebration shine through. This is the must-have Christmas album this festive season and it will be played over and over again as the years roll by.

Country crooner and western balladeer Peter Pratt has scored his fourth consecutive radio hit on the
National Top 30 Country Music charts.
This week, the Gold Guitar finalist song, Where I'm Longing To Go has debuted at Number 30.
It builds on a dream run for the Illabo based singer songwriter since releasing his debut album Ever True in March last year.
The album has spawned four top 30 hits, with the national favourite Ride On Little Ringer becoming a top ten hit for Peter.
Other singles include Wild Eyed Steer which was also a top ten hit and Ever True, Ever More.
Peter, who has carved a niche for himself in the Country Music industry with his unique approach and honey rich voice, said the news was both a wonderful surprise and compliment.
"I know I had left it a bit late to release the single to radio after its success as a Gold Guitar finalist, but the fact that radio and fans have still supported it so well is a huge compliment," he said.
"It's great. Thank you to everyone for their support."
Peter said the chart success for the album augers well for his future plans which includes a trip back into the studio within the next six months.
"I am working on songs for my next recording and we are also looking at a video clip," he said.

Peter's upcoming gigs include a special performance with Jeanette Wormald at Olivewood in Renmark, SA on October 8th. He then travels to Wagga Wagga for a Sunday Afternoon show at the Commercial Club on October 16th before heading towards Sydney for a show at the Antill Park Golf Club on Friday, October 21st and the Goulburn RSL Club on October 22nd.

Rod Dowsett
A QUIRKY LOVE SONG .... that's what you get when you listen to
new single
"I GOT ME A BOAT" (nfs #97 track 20)
If you've ever owned a boat, you will relate to Rod's lyrics.
The single taken from his debut album DODGING BULLETS, is a love song about a boat.
It's rough, raw & honest ... a simple track that lets Rod bare his soul.
"There is plenty of emotion and feeling to many of his songs ... when the opportunity comes along, you have to take it with both hands - that opportunity has arrived for Rod Dowsett with his album, Dodging Bullets."
Bob Anthony Jnr, Country Update
Behind Rod's emotionally charged vocals are stories from his own experiences.

Mr Strings

Dwayne Elix has prepared a new Bluegrass music album for the up and coming Mildura Country Music Festival at the end of September. Mr Strings is an album mixed with cover version of songs and songs Dwayne has written for the album. Popular songs like Orange Blossom Special, and the theme song to the movie “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”, and many more were recorded with only one singer and musician. Dwayne performed all the lead vocals, the harmony voices, and all the instruments. Guitar, Banjo, Bass, Mandolin, and Slide guitar, Dwayne played them all.
The songs he wrote for the album are – “Let’s Get This Show On The Road” a song about going to the Mildura Country Music Festival. “I Pick The Banjo Up” was written about the days when Dwayne grew up on the farm. “Dwayne’s Bluegrass Boogie” is an instrumental based on Guitar Boogie and performed on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and slide guitar. “Nadine’s Reel” is an Irish instrumental Dwayne wrote for his daughter.
The name of the album Mr Strings, used to be the nickname Dwayne got from radio compere Pinky (Gordon Fellows), back when Dwayne first came to Sydney. Pinky would always say “If it had strings, Dwayne could play it …”.

THE FIRE is the second single from Sydney country roots band WILDSEED, out soon on NFS 98. The band has been touring constantly all over the state yet somehow have still managed to find the time to put on the finishing touches to their new album
Michael Fix and Stuart French have been in the studio recently recording a duet

Patti McKinnon (with BillGoodall)

Her new album "Freedom Highway" came as a complete surprise. She was ready to hang the guitar on the wall when she received a call from Cable Productions in Cairns Nth Qld asking if she would accept a recording offer from them. She thought about it for about 60 seconds and decided it didn't matter that she was 58 years old and the Grandmother of 14. 'Lets Do It" she said.
The album has some great tracks on it and some songs that the Producer surprised her with because he was the boss and had the final choice of material. There are 3 of Patti's own songs on it.

Travis Collims - “1000 Memories of Home”
from album "Start the Car"  To be released in August
Those emotions have inspired Travis’s brand new single, “1000 Memories of Home” — a song he wrote while touring extensively earlier this year.

“1000 Memories of Home” is the first single from Travis’s debut album, Start the Car, which will be launched at this year’s Gympie Muster in August.

It’s a poignant, powerful ballad that indelibly marks Travis as one of the finest young songwriters and vocalists in Australia today.

“It’s a very honest song which comes from my heart and my experience. But it’s also a song I think a lot of people can relate to — especially anyone who’s got to be away from home a fair bit to make a living. It’s a lot to give up, but sometimes the rewards are so much greater because of it,” he said.      Click here Travis Collins Artist Report Page

Carter & Carter's album
The first single off Carter & Carter's album Acoustic Gospel is 'God Didn't Make Mistakes', a song about how each person is special in their own unique individual way. This song typifies the feeling of the Acoustic Gospel album and as Sue Jarvis from Capital News writes

" It's impossible not to feel good after listening to 'Acoustic Gospel'. The album has an extraordinary spirit and really embodies what Carter & Carter are all about - their warmth, their humanity, their insight into human nature and
especially the power of their songs to make you think and feel about the things that really matter. I love the album"

The single has been released to radio via NFS 96 track 6 and can also be found on the Acoustic Gospel album track 7.

The recording project was truly an international undertaking given that all songs were written and performed by Danish born Australian, Connie Kis and the recording was produced by renowned Canadian recording artist and producer Gary Buck. To add to that International mix, it was engineered by American Tom Pick, a 14 time Grammy Award winner.
The backing tracks were recorded in Nashville by some of Country Music's finest session musicians. Vocals were dubbed and all tracks mixed at Northbridge Sound Studios in Western Australia by Perth's acclaimed engineer, John Villani.
Goldust Productions Nashville, mastered the E.P.
Track 5, Let's Keep It Simple, a duet with Gary Buck is one of his last known recordings. Sadly, he passed away before the completion of the project.

Background info on the new album, 'Grace'
The new album "Grace" sounds a little bit different to other BordererS albums, but the reaction so far says it is the best to date!

Track 1 "Legacy" features the International tenor Brian Gilbertson in a duet with Alex. It's got a real World Music feel although Brian used to be a rock singer back in the 70's.
This song took a year and a half to get it right in the studio.

Track 2 "Grace" was nominated as one of the top 5 songs in the Gospel / Christian category of the Musicoz Awards! Many fans also commented on the song after the Adelaide Carols by Candlelight. This was the 4th version of this song.
We got it sounding better by watching "Standing in the shadows of Motown".

Track 4 "Sinner & the Saint" features the African American singer Dwight Adams in a duet with Alex plus a gospel choir. Dwight used to sing with Marvin Gaye & Billy Joel in New York.

Track 7 "Keep the Light On" was nominated as one of the top 3 songs in the Peace, Tolerance & Understanding Award at the Port Fairy Festival. This has been a crowd favourite from day one. This also took 18 months to make it sound like it does in our live performances.

Track 8 "The Dark Horse" is starting to be featured on the country music stations all around Australia and the video should be on Country Music Television in a few weeks time. The song features Jay Collie from "Jonah's Road" in a duet with Alex. We met Jay at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre when both bands won Musicoz Awards back in 2003.

Track 12 "The River is Deep" almost didn't make the album. We had one more day of recording before mixing began and we still didn't have the lyrics. I desperately searched through my filing cabinet for inspiration. I found a song that I wrote in 1980 called "This River needs Crossing" and we bunged that in. To our amazement, it seems to have worked. Hallelujah!

The album is now available in the shops. It's distributed by MGM Distribution and
One Stop Entertainment.

It's also available from The BordererS new Secure Online Service @
www.theborderers.com.au !
All the best,
