- With a vast collective
background in rockabilly, western swing, country, big
band, gypsy jazz, neo-swing and hillbilly swing, the members of
CHET ROMERO have developed a low slung, deep tuned, hybrid blend
of
cowboy rockabilly, hard drivin’ country highway tunes, ghost town
surf
instrumentals, and the sweetest & unluckiest ballads this side of
a cell wall.
This has been the major focus for Phil B Colson in the evolution
of
CHET ROMERO over the last 6 years.

- Phil’s background in the
Australian blues scene is renown, recording
seminal albums with Dutch Tilders and The Foreday Riders and
playing
with The Hippos, The Mighty Reapers, Blind Dog Taylor and The
Healers.
- Whether playing slide on a
‘Men At Work’ recording or pickin’ country
guitar with Bon Scott in Adelaide, Phil B Colson is also
bandleader and
composer for film, theatre and television. Phil’s desire to expand
his musical
ability instigated an investigation of a century of music spanning
Texas to
the Eiffel tower.
- Truck-a-billy, Honky Tonk,
Western Swing,
Gypsy Jazz and Bluegrass is now the expansive
repertoire of the CHET ROMERO show.
- Joining Phil B in this
truck-a-billy, honky stonkin’ western extravaganza is
the swinging & rockin’ rhythm section :
- Doug Weaver (acoustic
guitar, baritone guitar)
Angus Mackay (double bass) &
Adam Barnard (drums and washboard!).
- This smokin’ engine makes
for a wild ride in restless cowboy towns west of
the border . . . <turn up Track 4 on the Cd !!>
- Additional special guests
include George Washingmachine (fiddle) and
Roy Payne (steel guitar, baritone guitar)
giving CHET ROMERO western swing sounds reminiscent of
“Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys” and “Asleep At The Wheel”.
-
- The band’s musical variety
is fueled by Phil’s
liberal application of B-bender telecaster, baritone
guitar, rockabilly Gretschs, lap steel and mandolin
to keep the heel-clicking, toe tappin rhythms
flowing throughout the performance !
-
- Phil co-wrote the Kenworth
Cowboy
with “Singing Sweetheart” Mary Heard
and good friend John Van Keppel.
Phil’s love of country music came from
his time with Mary’s MidWest
Obsession, and listening to the
Helldorados and the bug bit hard!
-
- Whether an original highway
tune,
a crooning western ballad or
a belting guitar boogie
you are on a swingin’ ride down
HIGHWAY 1
with CHET ROMERO . . buckle up !
