- JACKIE MARSHALL’S Live Show
Crackles with
- Poise and Assuredness.
Described as “dignified chaos personified”,
Marshall’s uniqueness lies in her ability to masterfully lead her
guest players through hook-soaked, solidly crafted tunes while staying
true to her core talent as a vocal improviser. Attracting fans
from all corners, here’s what people have had to say about her work:
"An extraordinary writing style."
- Mystic Medusa, astrologer, The Australian Weekend Magazine
"...what you'd get if you whacked a set of tits on Paul Kelly and put
him in charge of a bordello."
- Adrian Waters, Big Brass Bed
“...like watching Edith Piaf, Janis Joplin and Jeff Buckley all let
loose out of the one person.”
punter, North Tamworth Bowlo, Country Music Fest ‘05
Jackie's debut solo release contains what she describes as
predominantly her "gentler, more intimate and pastorally-atmosphered
tunes....fit for salon performances".
Recorded chiefly in a Northern New South Wales farmhouse, the album
glows with an old world wooden-floored warmth; which when contrasted
with an adventurous arrangement of parts and players provides an aptly
incongruous atmosphere for Marshallʼs song material. There is both a
timelessness and an immediacy to her writing: something of the
perverse charm of the finally-awaking ingénue, straining herself
irrevocably through an absurd yet hard-learned, unapologetically
present first person-vernacular.
Marshall’s deliberate and personalised nylon-string guitar style and
amused vocal authority are formidably supported on the recording. A
deftly hand-picked collection of diverse fellow artists includes Chris
Pickering (The Horse You Rode In On, ex-Boat People), Ben Tolliday
(Trinkets, The Golden Circles), Jo Lack (Trinkets, National Golden
Fiddle Award winner, Tamworth 2005), plus guests Ant Aggs (Afro Dizzi
Act, Resin Dogs), Paul Hankinson (Brisbane Cabaret Festival), Eugene
Romanuik (Appian Way), Richard Johnston (Speedstar, Trinkets) and
Shaun Butcher (The Re-Mains).
Distribution for the album is sought, an Australian showcase tour
kicks off at the Tamworth Country Music Festival fringe in January
2006 to support its release.
A series of road demos and recorded live performances released in the
interim on Australian music download site
www.mp3.com.au/jackiemarshall have already attracted a loyal following
and some serious download action: Jackie's material took out first
place in the national Lo-Fi Alternative chart in September through to
November 2005.
A full schedule of performances in 2005 includes supports for Clare
Bowditch & The Feeding Set (with The Boat People), and Emiliana
Torrini (Iceland).
Fans of artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Diamanda Galas,
Lucinda Williams, Paul Kelly, Emiliana Torrini, Joy Hester, Janis
Joplin, Ivan Cankar, Jim Henson, Colin Hay, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf,
Lucie Thorne, Andrej Tarkovski, Nick Cave, Katherine Hepburn, Sime
Nugent, and Clare Bowditch will appreciate what Marshall has to offer.
Hi there Tamworth
Festival fans!
My name is Jackie Marshall, I'm from
Brisbane, via Dubbo, Toowoomba, and Slovenia!
I write and perform country-influenced music in the vein of
Paul-Kelly-meets-Diamanda-Galas - I have a funny little guitar setup,
I use a nylon string with nice delay pedals and a great old Fender
blues amp; and when I perform my material live I love to improvise
around the phrases – I can get pretty excitable!
Tamworth 2005 was my first Tamworth, and what a crazy time was had -
plenty'v frocks, rum, hats, and a healthy dose'v unladylike misbehavin';
but most importantly I hooked into an incredible community of
musicians. I was so inspired, I went back to my parents' farm in
Pottsville and recorded a bunch of tracks, sent them out to a whole
slew'v friends and musicians to hear what they had to say about my
thing.
Well - the response must'v been orright because somehow here I am at
the end'v 2005 with a proper rekkid nearly ready to unleash, with a
stack'v great musicians lettin loose on the tracks, and plenty of
shows on the boil. But the show I'm looking forward to most right now
is the one I'll be playing in Tamworth on the 24th of January, 2006,
at the North Tamworth Bowls Club, for Andrew Clermont's Supper Club.
Andrew was kind enough to have me get up on stage at his Supper Club
this year at the festival and lay out my tunes, and introduced me to
some incredible musicians. Not only, the folks at the Bowlo - staff
and punters alike - were damn cool as well! So I'm tremendously happy
to say that I plan to release my rekkid at the North Tamworth Bowlo,
the place where it all started for me in 2005.
I hope to see you there!
