- The Vibro-Lounge...
- A session review...
Monday gone saw the Vibro-Lounge
kick off with it's first session at Mojo's Bar in Fremantle. The
Vibrolators six piece line up was in fine form, and for some of us,
this was the first opportunity to see the band in a coupla years. The
word had obviously spread and a good turn out of friends, family,
Lindy Hoppin' Swing dancers & Rockers set an otherwise dull Perth
night on fire...
The addition of GBN Bushby
& Buffalooo Bill Blissett to the bands original line up has seen
the bands energy levels go from Supersonic to Lightspeed... Whereas
Hank Deberitz used to cover the upright bass duties, this is now taken
care of by GBN, a great consumer and mistreater of catgut &
spruce...
This in turn has seen Hank
Deberitz unleashed, ...well at least on a longer leash than before, up
front waving a crusty old Silvertone archtop guitar like it was an
overheated Kalashnikov and singin his heart out...if it's singin' we
can call it... whatever it is, preachin', squeelin' or demented
storytellin'...it's a highly energizing and entertaining experience to
see this new angle on all things Vibro-style.
Al James still holds the
whole thing together with jawdropping jump& chicago style
blues guitar, and his brilliant Johnny "Guitar" Watson style
vocals sets the scene off. With Billy Blissetts boogie
woogie piano and Drake Denyer's barking baritone sax, the Vibrolators
transported us all straight back to a time when cars had spats,
steering wheels were cream and the phone had a dial...
Particulary impressive was
Yugon Chobanoff's vintage style drumming. I see alot of roots, blues,
swing and rock and roll bands, but nowhere in the land of Oz have I
seen any drummer so dedicated to a style and feel long gone. This
man's a cross clone between Gene Krupa and Freddie Below.
Perth harmonica identity
Geoff Bushby was the evenings special guest, biting into some soaring
Little Walter tunes with the band. The special guest thing is
something the Vibro's promised to be an ongoing thing every
monday.
Coming monday will see
Blues & Swing Diva, Miss Peta Lee join the band. Other hot rumours
are Harry Deluxe, Greg Bird (Twang Thang&Mag 7), Captain
Ken"Cosmic"Fuller and the list goes on...I do believe we may
be in for some local stand up comedy as well as the Vibro-Lounge gets
established.
So, to sum it all up
folks... don't cheat yourselves out of a good time, pop on down to
Mojo's in Freo and catch these unique West Aussies. The east coast's
ravin' about them, the festivals are falling over themselves to get
them on the bill... The boys are in no hurry to hook up any other
residencies at this point in time, so come on down for a drink, a
dance, a bite or just a chill out and a laugh with The Vibrolators and
friends.
