- STRAWBALE DESIGN WEEKEND RESIDENTIAL
WORKSHOP
When: Friday 13th July(7pm) to Sunday 15 July(2pm)

- Outline
This is a two day residential workshop to develop practical skills
for designing and building strawbale structures. A historical and
theoretical background will be given on the science and techniques
of strawbale design with an emphasis on environmental sustainable
practices.
The workshop will apply the knowledge practically in constructing
a strawbale meditation hut during the course of the weekend. This
will involve close interaction with the facilitators in addressing
design issues and developing solutions that can be immediately
built insitu. Feedback on this will be given by the group as well
as comments by the facilitators.
Strawbale construction will be addressed as a viable alternative
to conventional building construction in both rural and urban
environments. The workshop will include examples of straw bale
buildings, handouts and an opportunity for hands on experience.
Learning Outcomes
- Understanding of the fundamentals of strawbale design
- Knowledge of environmental sustainable practices

- Appreciation of the impact of design on the natural environment
Facilitators:
Angus Stephen: is a Green Living Accredited Builder with the
Master Builders Association. He is a practicing builder in the
Southern Highlands and has studied and worked with Frank Thomas
from “Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow, Strawbale Construction”. He has
taken part in many strawbale projects around Australia. Prior to
being a builder he worked in small business training and
consulting. .
Greg O'Donnell: is a chartered architect and director of
Architecture of Spirit. He uses meditation as a core component for
his design practice in connecting people with the natural
environment. Greg has designed Hindu Temples, Retreat Centres,
Meditation Pavilions and residential projects using this
philosophy and regularly lectures at universities and colleges .

The Venue – Gudhara Holistic Sanctuary
Gudhara Holistic Sanctuary is a 100 acre retreat venue in the
Southern Highlands run under the principles of social, economic
and environmental sustainability. Weekend retreats and workshops
are conducted with an emphasis on raising consciousness for
personal and global transformation. Vegetable growing and land
management is based on permaculture and biodynamic principals. All
